Today I’m talking about the best natural ways to get rid of acne breakouts and give my top tips to heal cystic acne breakouts quickly and safely.
When a cystic breakout appears it can feel like the world is about to end. It’s not only the physical pain that can accompany an acne cyst – it’s the emotional pain that can also be difficult to overcome.
There have been times when I truly believed my skin was on the right track – I’d gone a few weeks with no new breakouts and I finally felt the black acne cloud fading away and my confidence slowly returning. Then out of nowhere I would feel that pain deep in my skin and my heart would sink and the fear of an impending breakout and future scarring would overwhelm me. I’d spend hours analysing my skin, obsessing over different methods to make this breakout go away and feeling like a total failure.
Luckily, through years of experience, I’ve learnt the best ways to relieve the physical and emotional pain of an acne breakout and help heal spots quickly and effectively.
Things I’ve tried to get rid of acne breakouts:
Below are some of the topical things I’ve tried in the past to quickly get rid of acne breakouts. Some of these methods are fantastic for the skin in general, but they’re just not strong enough for cystic acne, while others on the list are just downright irresponsible and probably made my skin worse in the long run. Natural tips to get rid of acne breakouts:
I hate to break it to you, but a big breakout or a deep cyst is never going to disappear overnight. However, there are a few tricks you can implement into your daily routine to help calm your skin down quicker and heal acne breakouts faster.
Don’t touch or pick
Whether you’re a picker, a popper, a squeezer or a toucher you need to nip this behavioural habit in the bud if you want your skin to heal as quickly as possible. Picking, popping and squeezing your spots can:
- Can push the infection deeper
- Can cause more spots
- Can make inflammation worse
- Can cause Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)
- Can cause deep pitted scars
Use a heat compress
Out of all the cystic acne treatments I’ve tried over the past 12 years, this is the only thing I’ve found to truly make a difference within 48 hours. Now, I’m not going to tell you that applying a heat compress for 15 minutes will get rid of that large cyst or breakout. BUT regular application of a heat compress over the course of a few days will dramatically improve the appearance of your skin and cut down your healing time.
If you’re someone who despairs at a new cyst because you just know it’s going to be there for weeks, even months, then a heat compress could be what you’ve been looking for. It can help reduce inflammation and dramatically speed up healing time! Using a heat compress a few times per day directly on the cyst can help reduce inflammation and emulsify the gunk clogged deep in your pore so the cyst comes to the surface faster.

Get your heart pumping
Nothing can stimulate the healing process like a quick work out! Going out for a run and breaking a sweat will not only improve your mood, boosts your self-confidence and improve your sleep cycle, it also increases circulation which brings extra blood flow to skin and boosts immune function which can speed up healing and reduce inflammation.

Make yourself a green juice
Cheek acne (and sometimes jawline and chin acne too) is the most common place to develop a deep, painful acne breakout. Acne on the cheeks are often indicators that your digestive system and liver are struggling to cope with detoxing waste efficiently. By drinking a delicious green juice every day you can really help bring your body back into balance for healthier digestion and clearer skin.
There’s no doubt about it, adding a fresh juice to your daily routine is one of the easiest ways to kick start a healthier morning but juicing can also play an important role in clearing your acne. In the long term, regular green juices will support your body and skin but in the short term, making a nutrient dense green juice will give you something positive to channel your energy in to. Instead of obsessing over your skin in the mirror – just walk away, make yourself a juice, think about all the amazing nutrients you’re giving your skin and just let it go!

Take a chill pill
Along the same theme of my previous tip, walking away from the mirror and channeling your energy into something positive is the best way to relieve stress, forget about your skin and focus on something great. The less you obsess and stress about that cyst, the quicker it’ll heal and disappear. One of the key things I’ve learnt during my acne healing journey is to never underestimate the power of stress when it comes to acne breakouts!
Feel an acne cyst coming on? Do whatever makes you happiest: escape in a good book, relax in a candlelit bath, take a yoga class or simply hang out with someone who makes you smile!
