In today’s post, I’ve collaborated with one of my favourite healthy eating gurus Kezia Hall from Supernaturally Healthy, why is she my fave? Because she promotes a truly healthful way of eating that I also believe is the key to healing and long-lasting health. No living off salad, low-fat dressing and juices and no crazy restrictive diets that mean you miss out on vital nutrients (more on this later!)
Instead, we’re looking at the ways eating lots more healthful fat is the key to healing acne and the rest of your body. So settle down with a mug of Kezia’s Fat-tastic Hot Cocoa, and get ready to change the way you think about fats for good!
how does eating fat clear acne and heal the body?
So my guess is that you have heard the whole ‘fat is good’ chat that is flooding the internet. You’re suddenly realising that everything you have been told about fats growing up was wrong (thank goodness, fat-free yogurt is SO bad isn’t it?)
But HOW is fat healing for you body? In what way will it help you to heal. How will eating more healthy natural fats help your hormones, skin and digestion heal? How will it help you regain your energy?
Now first just to clarify about fats, I am talking healthy natural fats here. You still want to avoid like the PLAGUE processed trans fats – or as I like to call them Frankenstein fats. These are vegetable oils like sunflower, rapeseed or plain vegetable oil. Anything that says hydrogenated fat, deep fat fryers (unless they are using something like ghee which is SO unlikely). Healthy fats are butter, ghee, coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil, fats on grass fed meats, fats in wild fish, egg yolks, coconut milk/cream, small portions of nuts, organic A2 dairy if you tolerate lactose and don’t have a leaky gut (casein can be problematic for digestive issues).
Eating fats wont give you heart disease! There was a meta-analysis published in January 2015, which pulled together 21 unique studies that included almost 350,000 people, 11,000 of whom developed cardiovascular disease, tracked over the average of 14 years and this study concluded that there is no relationship between intake of saturated fat and incidents of heart disease or stroke. Boom!
Basically, we got it wrong back in 1957 when the first poorly done research paper came out from Ansel Keys suggesting that fats are harmful. Fat doesn’t clog up your arteries. Eating cholesterol does not automatically mean it goes into your blood and clogs up your heart. That is not what the research is telling us.
So how is fat so healing? Let look at how eating fat can heal acne and the rest of your body:
eating fat balances blood sugar
Basically eating more healthy fats will help with your insulin management and insulin is queen when it comes to your hormones, mood/mental health and energy. Fat is digested slower than carbohydrates and therefore mean that you’re not getting a rush of glucose and then insulin into your blood. And this plays a HUGE role in weight loss too – poor blood sugar balance will mean you will really struggle to lose any weight.
And in my session with client this is the FRIST thing we work on because happy blood sugar helps to reduce the entire stress burden on your body. And why I created my higher fat sweet treat ebook to ensure you an eat some cake and still heal. Win!
eating fat helps build hormones
The building block for all your hormones in your body is cholesterol, so we REALLY want healthy amount of cholesterol and whilst the body produces 75% of the cholesterol in your body we can help by eating more healthy fats. Cholesterol is also essential for healthy cell membranes (outer ‘wall of all your cells that control whats goes in and out) so eating fat can really help your body heal on a fundamental level.
eating fat helps you absorb fat-soluble vitamins
In my virtual nutrition clinic the vitamin I see that people are most deficient are fat soluble ones. Vitamin D, E, K, A, are all essential for your to lose weight, have healthy skin, hormones, immune system and minds.
Amy says: Fats contain an abundance of essential vitamins and nutrients that are vital for clearing the skin. For example, eggs, liver and butter contain vitamins A, D, E, iodine, selenium and short and medium chain fatty acids. Vitamins A, D and E are the three best vitamins for healthy skin. Full stop. Between them, they cool inflammation, reduce sebum oxidisation, reduce oily skin and balance testosterone levels. Iodine, selenium and vitamin A also support thyroid function and vitamin E and D promote healthy ovulation and support female hormones.
eating fat increases bile production
Healthy fats are needed to support the liver and eliminate toxins and excess hormones by stimulating the production and release of bile. Healthy bile flow is essential for a number of vital roles in achieving and maintaining clear skin including:
- absorbing acne clearing, fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K
- helping to digest fats, proteins and starches properly
- regulating friendly bacteria in the gut
- helping your liver eliminate toxins and excess hormones
Low-fat and low protein diets can prevent these important steps by causing bile stagnation.
Remember, bile is not only essential for eliminating toxins, but it’s also key to digesting food better AND absorbing the right nutrients you need for healthier skin and happy hormones!
eating fat heals your metabolism
Studies show that specific fats called MCT (medium chain triglycerides) rev up your metabolism. They set fire in your belly, meaning you use up more energy, burn more calories and store less energy/fat.
That is the reason why people have gone CRAZY over coconut oil as it is high in MCT fats, which in turn help nourish your metabolism (not because it is some ‘cure-all’ fat!)
MCT fats can also help to boost your ketone level which are our bodies alternative fuel source to glucose and helpful if you are pursing a state of nutritional ketosis.
What you eat is the MOST important thing you can do to heal your acne and body. Sure, supplements are useful and can help boost results but really it’s all about your diet and what you eat day in, day out.
So as we head into the festive period – feel free to add that extra ghee to you Christmas veggies. Don’t throw away that turkey fat – keep it to cook your eggs in! And why not have a cooked breakfast every day, like scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, to keep you balance and happy throughout the festive season?
And if you are looking for a TOTAL health overhaul in 2018 then I am running private Retreat in Scotland (just a plane ride away) in February.
