This week I’m looking at all the amazing benefits of Peppermint and Spearmint for acne!
Fresh mint leaves are extremely versatile and add flavour and nutrition to many different recipes. Peppermint is mainly known for promoting digestion – it soothes stomachs and can help with indigestion or inflammation but did you know that peppermint and spearmint also have some pretty amazing acne fighting benefits too?
The benefits of peppermint and spearmint for acne
I initially thought Peppermint was good for the skin because it helps with digestions – and a healthy, happy gut is one of, if not the most important factor to achieving beautifully clear skin.
Peppermint is a good source of manganese, vitamin C and vitamin A and it’s said that mint may strengthen skin tissue and help reduce oily skin! A simple trick to combat oiliness is to boil some mint leaves in water and simmer until the water evaporates by half. Once cool, strain the mixture to use an a facial toner – this homemade remedy will help keep blemishes at bay and help balance oiliness.
Peppermint also has a strong anti-inflammatory action so will help reduce any nasty cystic spots – try grinding mint leaves with a small amount of rose water to form a paste and apply to any blemishes to heal them faster. If you suffer from deep, cystic acne you can leave this mixture on overnight.
The fantastic anti-inflammatory action of mint comes from its high content of salicylic acid. I’m sure you’ve heard of this ingredient before – it’s found in loads of beauty products however many brands use the synthetic versions because it’s so much cheaper. Because it’s synthetic, it won’t metabolise as easily into the skin so you won’t reap the benefits as much as using a natural alternative. Salicylic acid loosens up dead skin cells, allowing them to shed easier. That has the potential to prevent your pores from clogging up, resulting in fewer pimples and clearer skin.
The benefits of spearmint for acne
Spearmint helps slow down and delays the oxidation of fats and helps to prevent the formation of blemishes. This basically means that spearmint can prevent the sebum on your skin from ‘going bad’. When sebum oxidises in a pore it hardens and creates a plug, allowing acne-causing bacteria to colonise beneath the plug leading to infection and inflammation.
Another way that spearmint is an effective natural acne treatment is through its anti-androgenic effects. A small study showed that PCOS women who drank 2 cups of spearmint tea everyday for a month showed a significant reduction in the level of excess androgens. Androgens (primarily testosterone and DHT) increase sebum production, inflammation and stimulate the growth of skin cells. These 3 factors provide the perfect conditions for acne to occur so by reducing the levels of free testosterone in the body, spearmint tea can prevent the hormonal imbalance that is known to trigger acne breakouts.
