This article looks at some of my top skin care essentials to clear acne and fade scars. If you want to know the best scientifically proven ingredients to fight acne then read on!
Having struggled with acne for over 13 years, I’ve learnt that the best skin care routine for acne doesn’t involve lots of harsh chemicals that burn and further irritate the skin. Instead, a calming routine that consists of natural products packed full of skin healing actives is by far the most effective way to treat acne topically. I believe there is no such thing a ‘quick fix’ or a ‘miracle cure’ when it comes to resolving skin problems. If you’re struggling with constant blemishes then it’s not something that can be fixed overnight.
5 SKIN CARE ESSENTIALS TO CLEAR ACNE & FADE SCARS
To fully heal persistent acne it’s important to adopt a holistic approach to all aspects of your life including your diet, your supplementation, stress management and not forgetting your skin care routine. A natural skin care regime is paramount to helping calm and heal your skin during and after a breakout but overloading your skin and complicating your routine with tonnes of different cleansers, toners, moisturisers, oils and treatments can often be too much for those who struggle with acne.
While the idea of such a basic routine may seem alien to the majority of women – it’s said UK women alone spend over £2,000 a year on beauty products! When your complexion is acting up the best thing you can do is cut back on all the harsh lotions and potions and allow your skin to rebalance with these simple skin care essentials to clear acne & fade scarring:
OIL CLEANSING FOR ACNE
Acne is generally the symptom of an internal problem with digestion or hormones, usually a bit of both which causes the overproduction and oxidisation of sebum which leads to acne. This means my advice is always look at your diet first if you’re suffering from persistent acne. However, you can help your skin from the outside too. you just need to remember to work with your sebum, not against it! This means no more stripping your skin and drying it out.
Instead, incorporate non-comedogenic, organic oils into your skincare routine and you’ll be replacing the ‘bad’ sebum with clean, healthy oils which will nourish and protect your skin. Hemp seed oil is the lightest and best acne-friendly oil to use and is excellent for removing make-up, cleansing the skin and moisturising. When used during the oil cleansing method Hemp seed oil will also remove dirt and grime from deep down within the pores where water and soap can’t always reach, making it excellent for dissolving blackheads and clearing congested skin.
TOPICAL PROBIOTICS FOR ACNE
We all know how good probiotics are for our gut therefor help us to heal our skin from the inside, but you can also apply probiotics to your face for impressive results on acne breakouts. Bacteria overgrowth plays a key role in the final stages of an acne breakout. Acne occurs when chronic, internal inflammation causes our sebum to oxidise and results in the excess production of keratin (skin cells) – which creates a clogged pore that allows bacteria to thrive and results in an inflamed pimple.
By treating our skin with topical probiotics, we can benefit from a clearer complexion as it will encourage the good bacteria on your skin to flourish and help keep acne bacteria under control. Read more on topical probiotics for acne here.
DAILY SPF FOR ACNE SCARS
Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is vital when it comes to healing acne scars as quickly as possible. Sun exposure can cause hyper pigmentation and the darkening of existing acne scars, while some ingredients used in acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide can also increase the chances of sun sensitivity, making your skin more vulnerable to long-term UV-related ageing and hyper pigmentation. It can be tricky to find natural sun protection that doesn’t contain coconut oil, cocoa butter, beeswax, plant wax or other ingredients that could cause clogged pores and potential breakouts so once you find your favourite daily SPF, it’ll be a life-long friend! TOPICAL ANTIOXIDANTS FOR ACNE
Gentle retinoids, such as retinol or retinaldehyde, provide total skin rejuvenation and powerful acne clearing results by preventing clogged pores and helping to slow down sebum production while also fading pigmentation and scars. Read more about retinoids here.
If you’re looking for something to reduce inflammation then topical vitamin B3, or niacinamide, has been shown in an 8 week study to reduce acne count by 60% compared to an antibiotic gel that reduced acne by just 43%. Read more about vitamin B3 here.
Acne scars and pigmentation getting you down? Look for some vitamin C in your next treatment serum as it can promote collagen formation to plump out scars and fade post acne marks and hyper pigmentation. Read more about vitamin C here.
GREEN TEA FOR ACNE
Green Tea is also one of the best ingredients you can use on your skin if you suffer from acne. Green tea fights all three causes of acne: hormones, inflammation and bacteria making it one of the most studied and effective natural ingredients to fight acne.
There is evidence that shows that those prone to acne are more sensitive to androgen hormones than those who have clear skin. When there’s too much free testosterone floating around our blood (from PCOS or insulin resistance) an enzyme in our body called 5-alpha reductase converts that testosterone into a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is much, much, much more potent version of testosterone and it’s actually DHT, NOT testosterone that causes oily skin, acne breakouts, hirsutism and sometimes even male pattern baldness!
How can green tea help? Green Tea can have a significant impact on skin DHT levels as studies have shown that Green Tea can inhibit the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT in the skin!

Remember, although natural skin care products can help improve acne and protect your skin from damage, you shouldn’t rely on topical products alone to keep your skin clear. The only way you can say goodbye to acne and be 100% consistently clear, is if you change your diet and lifestyle and heal your body from the inside out, so starting eating your veggies and work on managing your stress levels!
